342-FH-3A-42795-57800AC iwo In an Iwo Jima strike precluding the invasion of the Volcano island, 55 gallon drum incendiary bombs are directed by Saipan-based 7th AAF B-24 30th Bomb Group, 27th Bomb Squadron Consolidated liberators on a wooded area near the invasion beach where possible Jap enfilading fire might be encountered. Partially a test strike to determine effectiveness of the drum fire bombs, conducted by the Chemical warfare section of AAFPOA, the effectiveness of the bombs was undetermined due to poor reconnaiss¬ance conditions. Twenty-one bombers in all made the strike on February 1, 1945, dropping eight drums each, from 19,000 to 20,700 feet.
