Lt. Fred O Erbele's 333rd Fighter Squadron, 318th Fighter Group P-38 "Ripper" took several direct hits during a low level attack on Iwo Jima on January 5th, 1945. He is seen here nursing his fighter back to Siapan which took four hours 40 minutes to return - A B-24 with flaps down escorted the P-38 home.
