342-FH-3A-38412-57714AC 318th fg Jap gunners on Iwo Jima almost scored a "kill" at expense of 7th AAF 1st Lt. Robert H. Amon, 1326 East Sixth St., Duluth, Minnesota, shown above inspecting the tail boom of his Lockheed P-38, almost severed from the tail assembly when a 40-Millimeter anti-aircraft shell struck his Lightning fighter. Streaking fifty feet above the Jap positions, Lt. Amon was flying escort to a reconnaissance Lightning. With right rudder controls torn out and the boom barely hanging together, he flew the plane 700 miles bsck to his Marianas base.
