Chichi Jima, Bonin Island Group - Pilot is in the boat before the smoke markers burn out. Air-sea rescue was a smooth running business in which standard procedures were developed for submarines, naval craft, and planes to cooperate in getting back downed men. (Rescue plane used was a specially modified B-17 equipped with "Flying Dutchman" lifeboat and operating from airfield on Iwo Jima.) 4th Emergency Rescue Squadron
