Boeing B-17 crew of the 4th Emergency Rescue Squadron has spotted their man and has released "Flying Dutchman". When lifeboat hits water, smoke markers go off to show its location. In three and one half years, air-sea rescue changed from haphazard luck to scientific operation. (A specially modified Boeing B-17 equipped with "Flying Dutchman" lifeboat and operating from airfield on Iwo Jima, was used as rescue plane).
