E-342-FH-3A-42533-70420AC marine wounded The casualty rate during initial landings on Iwo Jima, Bonin Islands, was higher than expected and the evacuation facilities were inadequate to the 9th Troop Carrier Squadron planes were called upon to evacuate the wounded. After casualties were loaded on a Curtiss C-46 it was discovered that the plane couldn't take off because of a leak in the oil system. All the patients were transferred to another C-46 for the flight to Guam or Saipan where medical facilities were available. 5 March 1945
